The Overland Track – Tasmania’s Iconic Wilderness Adventure

This six-day hike takes you through a breathtaking landscape of ancient rainforests, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and serene lakes.

🥾 Overland Track Itinerary (Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair)
🗓 Day 1: Ronny Creek to Waterfall Valley Hut
Distance: ~10.7 km (via Marions Lookout)
Time: 4–6 hours
Highlight: Climbing past Crater Lake and Marions Lookout for panoramic views of Cradle Mountain.
Waterfall Valley Hut: Modern and spacious hut rebuilt in 2020. Offers cooking area, sleeping platforms, and stunning valley views. Good side-trip to Barn Bluff for experienced hikers.
🗓 Day 2: Waterfall Valley to Lake Windermere
Distance: ~7.8 km
Time: 3–4 hours
Highlight: Open alpine moorland with views of the Pelion Range.
Windermere Hut: Small but cosy hut overlooking Lake Windermere. Great swimming (if you’re brave), and ideal for relaxing afternoons.
🗓 Day 3: Windermere to Pelion Hut
Distance: ~16.8 km
Time: 6–8 hours
Highlight: Through forests and buttongrass plains with optional side trip to Old Pelion Hut, a historic mining relic.
Pelion Hut: One of the largest huts on the track. Scenic location with nearby river, plenty of tent platforms, and access to Mount Oakleigh.
🗓 Day 4: Pelion Hut to Kia Ora Hut
Distance: ~8.6 km
Time: 4–6 hours
Highlight: Ascend Pelion Gap, with options to summit Mount Ossa (Tasmania’s highest peak).
Kia Ora Hut: Nestled in rainforest. Nearby waterfalls (like D’Alton and Fergusson Falls) make for perfect afternoon walks.
🗓 Day 5: Kia Ora to Windy Ridge (Bert Nichols Hut)
Distance: ~9.6 km
Time: 4–5 hours
Highlight: Waterfall day! Explore Hartnett Falls, Fergusson Falls, and D’Alton Falls on short detours.
Bert Nichols Hut (Windy Ridge): A modern, spacious hut with panoramic views of The Du Cane Range. Large deck and good tent platforms.
🗓 Day 6: Windy Ridge to Narcissus Hut (Lake St Clair)
Distance: ~9 km
Time: 3–4 hours
Highlight: Walk through lush eucalypt forests and finish at Lake St Clair.
Narcissus Hut: Basic but peaceful hut near the ferry terminal. You can book the Lake St Clair ferry or walk the final 17.5 km along the lake to Cynthia Bay.

Transfers: Most hikers book gear hire and transfers with local services like Wild Island Adventure Hire.
